The scooter was the typical mode of transport in China. Some operated as inexpensive taxis, as indicated by the blue uniform (with white stripes)worn by the rider. Others rode bicycles, some with gas-motor assist. Maroon VW Jettas comprised the majority of the taxicabs. Most drivers honked often, at first I found this strange but soon realized that they were warning slower moving vehicles, pedestrian, or uncertain drivers of their prescence. Despite their crazy driving, I actually felt very safe riding in the taxis, maybe because of the lack of traffic? Very few - if any - cars showed any dings or dents.
